Description
Why the Galaxy S8 Wallet Case Replaces Your Phone Case and Your Billfold at the Same Time
Most mornings start the same way. You pick up your Samsung Galaxy S8, then you pick up your wallet, then you pat your back pocket on the way out the door to make sure both are actually there. This case ends that routine. It is a crazy-horse textured PU leather folio that holds your Galaxy S8 (G950, 5.8-inch) on one side and your everyday cards, a folded note, and a photo on the other, closed with a magnetic flap so nothing works its way loose in a coat pocket or a bag.
What separates it from the hundreds of other folio cases on the market is the second half of the design. The inner shell is a separate leather-coated TPU case that holds the phone on its own, and it attaches to the folio magnetically. Lift it out and you have a slim, soft-touch back case with nothing attached. Press it back in and you have the full wallet again. That is the whole idea behind the detachable 2-in-1 construction, and it is the reason this case suits people whose day changes shape halfway through it.
The folio also folds back on itself into a stand, so the Galaxy S8's 5.8-inch display sits at a viewing angle on a desk, a tray table, or a kitchen counter without you propping it against a coffee cup. It is a quiet, practical set of features rather than a dramatic one, and that is exactly who it is for: people who want one object in their pocket instead of two, and who would rather their phone looked like a notebook than a piece of equipment.
This is a Galaxy S8 case and only a Galaxy S8 case. It is cut for the G950, the 5.8-inch model released in 2017. It does not fit the Galaxy S8 Plus, and it does not fit the Galaxy S8 Active. Those phones have different dimensions and different camera placements, and a wallet folio that is even a few millimetres out will not close properly over the flap. Check the model on your handset before ordering, and if you are not sure, our team will happily check it for you.
Key Features
- Detachable 2-in-1 construction: the inner leather-coated TPU shell lifts out of the folio and holds the phone entirely on its own, then reattaches by magnetism when you want the wallet back.
- Crazy-horse textured PU leather cover: a synthetic leather finish with the mottled, slightly waxy grain that gives crazy-horse its name, so handling marks blend into the surface instead of standing out against it.
- Card slots, photo slot, and cash pocket: the interior carries credit cards in dedicated slots, a photo slot, and a full-width pocket sized for folded notes or receipts.
- Built-in viewing stand: the cover folds back and locks against the shell to prop the Galaxy S8 up in landscape for video, recipes, or a video call.
- Secure magnetic flap closure: a magnetic tab holds the folio shut so cards stay seated and the screen stays covered in a pocket or a bag.
- Soft TPU inner shell: a flexible thermoplastic polyurethane case grips the phone and absorbs the ordinary knocks of daily carry, with cutouts left clear for the camera, ports, and buttons.
- Colour: Black, with a tan interior lining, as shown in the product photography on this page.
- Compatibility: machined for the Samsung Galaxy S8 (G950, 5.8-inch) only. It does not fit the Galaxy S8 Plus or the Galaxy S8 Active.
Materials Explained, Honestly
It is worth being precise about what this case is made of, because the phrase "crazy horse leather" causes a lot of confusion online.
Crazy horse is a finish, not a grade of hide. The outer cover of this case is PU leather, a synthetic material, finished with a crazy-horse texture. Crazy horse describes a particular look: a waxed, pull-up appearance where the surface lightens slightly when it is bent or scratched, then settles back down. On genuine hide that effect comes from wax worked into the fibres. Here it is reproduced in a synthetic coating. The manufacturer specifies the material as PU leather, so this is not a genuine leather case and we are not going to describe it as one. If a genuine hide wallet case is what you are after, this is not the product, and we would rather you knew that on this page than after the box arrives.
What you do get from a good PU leather is consistency. It does not vary from panel to panel the way hide does, it does not stain from a splash of coffee the way untreated leather can, and it wipes clean with a damp cloth. For a case that lives in a pocket and gets handled a hundred times a day, that is a reasonable trade.
The inner shell is TPU with a leather coating. Thermoplastic polyurethane is the flexible, slightly rubbery polymer used in phone cases, watch straps, and the midsoles of running shoes. It has a useful combination of properties for this job: it stretches enough to let you seat and remove the phone without a fight, it grips the hand rather than sliding out of it, and it flexes under a knock instead of transmitting the whole impact straight through. The leather coating on the outside of the shell is what lets it sit flush inside the folio and look like part of the same object rather than a plastic insert.
On weight and thickness: the manufacturer does not specify a finished product weight or an added thickness figure for this case, so we are not going to publish one. Any number you see quoted elsewhere for a case like this is an estimate. What we can tell you from the construction is what you would expect of any folio: a wallet case is thicker than a bare back case, because it has a second panel and a card stack on it, and the detachable shell on its own is the slim option when you want it.
How the Detachable 2-in-1 Design Actually Works
The phrase "2-in-1" gets used loosely, so here is what it means on this specific case.
Your Galaxy S8 does not sit directly in the folio. It sits in a separate inner case, a TPU shell with a leather coating, which wraps the back and sides of the phone and has its own cutouts for the camera, the rear fingerprint sensor, the USB-C port, the headphone jack, and the side buttons. That shell is a complete, functioning phone case in its own right. You could carry the phone in nothing else and it would be protected on the back and the edges.
That shell then attaches to the inside of the folio by magnetism. There is nothing to clip, bolt, or glue. You press the shell onto the folio panel and it holds; you lift it off at a corner and it releases. Going between the two modes takes a couple of seconds and does not involve taking the phone out of anything.
In folio mode you get:
- The cover closed over the screen with a magnetic flap, so the display is protected face-down and in a pocket.
- Card slots, a photo slot, and a cash pocket on the inside of the cover.
- The stand function, by folding the cover back and letting the shell rest against it in landscape.
- One object to carry instead of a phone and a wallet.
In shell-only mode you get:
- A slim soft-touch back case with no cover and no cards attached.
- Full access to the screen with nothing folded behind it, which is what you want for photography, for the gym, or for handing the phone to someone.
- A noticeably lighter and thinner package in a trouser pocket.
- The option to leave the folio and your cards in a bag or a drawer and take only the phone.
The practical version of this is a day that starts in an office and ends at a five-a-side pitch. You carry the full wallet to work, then before the game you pull the shell out, drop the folio in your kit bag, and take a slim-cased phone onto the pitch. Same case, two different jobs, no second purchase.
Who This Case Is For
- The one-pocket commuter: travel card, bank card, phone. Tap in at the barrier without digging for a separate wallet, and keep one thing to lose instead of two.
- The person who still loves their Galaxy S8: the handset is years into service and working perfectly well. A folio keeps the screen covered and the back scuff-free so it keeps going without looking tired.
- The weekday-to-weekend switcher: full wallet during the week, bare shell at the weekend. The detachable design is the whole reason this works without buying two cases.
- The frequent flyer: boarding pass, ID, and a card in the slots, and the stand function for a film on the tray table once you are up.
- The parent at the kitchen counter: the cover folds into a stand so a recipe or a video stays upright and visible while both your hands are busy.
- The gift buyer: a tidy, understated black folio is one of the few phone accessories that works as a present for someone whose taste you are not certain of.

Setting It Up, Step by Step
- Unpack the folio and the inner shell. They may arrive already attached; if so, lift the shell away from the folio at one corner so you can work with each part separately.
- Wipe the back and edges of your Galaxy S8 with a dry microfibre cloth so no grit is trapped between the phone and the shell.
- Seat the phone into the TPU shell. Start at one end, press the phone down into the tray, then work the flexible sides over the corners one at a time until the shell sits flush all the way round.
- Check the cutouts before you go any further: camera clear, rear fingerprint sensor clear, USB-C port clear, headphone jack clear, and the power, volume, and Bixby buttons all pressing cleanly.
- Load the folio. Slide your cards into the slots, a photo into the photo slot if you want one, and any folded notes into the full-width pocket. Load it with what you actually carry rather than filling every slot for the sake of it.
- Press the shell onto the folio panel so the magnets take hold, then close the cover and check that the flap tab seats cleanly against the magnet.
- Try the stand once so you know how it works before you need it: fold the cover back on itself and rest the shell against the fold with the phone in landscape.
Care and Troubleshooting
- The cover will not sit flat when closed. This is almost always a card-stack problem rather than a case problem. Take one card out of the fullest slot and try again. A folio closes flat when the card stack is even across the panel, and bulges when everything is loaded into one slot.
- The shell keeps coming away from the folio. Check that nothing is caught between the two faces, a receipt or a card edge is the usual culprit. The magnetic hold needs flat contact across the panel to work properly.
- New cards are a tight fit. That is normal and intentional on a new folio. The slots loosen within a week or so of use. Do not force a card in at an angle, slide it in square and let the slot stretch to it.
- The stand slips on a smooth desk. Set the fold slightly deeper so more of the cover is in contact with the surface, and keep the phone in landscape rather than portrait, which is the orientation the stand geometry is designed around.
- Cleaning. Wipe the PU leather with a barely damp cloth and let it air dry. Avoid alcohol wipes, solvents, and leather conditioners intended for genuine hide, all of which can cloud or lift a synthetic finish. The TPU shell can be rinsed and dried separately once the phone is out of it.
- Buttons feel unresponsive. Reseat the phone in the shell. A shell that is only half-seated at one corner pushes the button rail slightly out of line with the phone's own buttons.
- Still stuck. Call us on 978-797-0223. We would rather spend two minutes on the phone than have you wrestle with it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this case fit the Galaxy S8 Plus or the S8 Active?
No. This case is cut for the Samsung Galaxy S8 (G950, 5.8-inch) only. The S8 Plus is a physically larger handset and the S8 Active has a different body, so neither will seat correctly in the shell or close properly under the flap. If you are unsure which model you have, check Settings, then About phone, then Model number, and look for G950.
Is this genuine leather?
No. The cover is PU leather, a synthetic material, finished with a crazy-horse texture. Crazy horse is the name of the finish, not a grade of animal hide. The manufacturer specifies the material as PU leather and TPU, and we are reporting that as published rather than dressing it up.
Does the inner shell really come out of the folio?
Yes. The inner shell is a separate leather-coated TPU case that holds the phone on its own and attaches to the folio by magnetism. You lift it away at a corner to use the slim shell by itself and press it back on to restore the full wallet. The phone stays in the shell throughout, so you are not pulling the handset in and out to switch modes.
How many cards does it hold?
The manufacturer does not publish a card capacity for this case, so we are not going to quote a number. What is specified is the layout: credit card slots, a photo slot, and a cash pocket. The product photography on this page shows the interior, and how much it comfortably takes will depend on the thickness of your particular cards.
Does it have RFID blocking?
No. The manufacturer does not specify RFID or NFC shielding for this case, so you should assume it has none. If RFID blocking is a requirement for you, this is not the case to buy, and we would rather say so plainly than leave it vague.
What is in the box?
One crazy-horse PU leather cover and one detachable TPU case, supplied in a simple protective bag. That is the complete contents as specified by the manufacturer. The phone is not included, and no screen protector, cleaning cloth, or tool is included with this case.
How much does it weigh and how much thickness does it add?
Not specified by the manufacturer. No finished product weight and no added-thickness figure is published for this case, so we are not publishing one either. In general terms it is a folio, so it is thicker than a plain back case, and the detachable shell on its own is the slimmer of the two configurations.
Is this a rugged or heavy-duty case?
No, and it is important to be clear about that. This is an everyday PU leather folio. It carries no IP rating, no drop certification, and no ruggedness rating of any kind, because none is published for it. What it provides is the ordinary protection a folio gives: a flexible TPU shell around the back and edges, and a cover across the screen when it is closed. If you need a hard-wearing case for a job site, this is not the product and you should call us on 978-797-0223 so we can point you at the right one.
Does it work with a screen protector already on my phone?
In most cases yes. The folio cover closes over the front of the phone rather than clamping onto the display, so a flat or case-friendly protector sits underneath it without being lifted at the edges. Full-coverage curved protectors on the Galaxy S8's rounded display are the ones most likely to catch, so if yours wraps the curve, check that the cover still closes flat before you load the card slots.
Does wireless charging work through the case?
The manufacturer does not publish a wireless charging specification for this case, so we cannot promise it either way. What we can tell you is the practical approach: a stack of cards sitting between the phone and a charging pad interferes with wireless charging on any wallet case, so if you charge wirelessly, detach the inner shell from the folio first and set the shell on the pad. The USB-C port is left clear by the cutout, so cable charging is unaffected.
Can I still use the rear fingerprint sensor?
Yes. The inner shell has a cutout at the rear sensor position, so the Galaxy S8's fingerprint reader sits exposed next to the camera as it does on the bare phone. The sensor is only reachable in shell-only mode or with the folio opened out, which is the same as every other wallet case.
Will the magnets harm my bank cards?
Modern chip and contactless cards are not affected by the small magnets used in case closures, because the chip and the contactless antenna are not magnetic media. Older cards that rely purely on a magnetic stripe are the ones to be careful with, so if you still carry a stripe-only card such as some hotel keys or older transit passes, keep it in the slot furthest from the flap.
Does the stand work in portrait as well as landscape?
Landscape is what the stand is designed for. Folding the cover back and resting the shell against the fold holds the phone steady on its long edge, which is the orientation you want for video and calls. Portrait is not a supported stand position on this case and will not hold reliably.
What colours is it available in?
Black, which is the version listed and photographed on this page, with a tan interior. That is the only configuration we are selling for the Galaxy S8 in this design. Some product photography for this style circulates showing other colourways, but Black is what this listing is and what you will receive.
What is the returns policy on this case?
You have 30 days from delivery to request a return, and returns are resolved as store credit or an exchange rather than a cash refund. Returns from within the US ship back on a free return label we provide, international returns carry a fee of roughly 4.99 US dollars, and there are no restocking fees either way. Items must be unopened to be accepted, an RMA number is required before you send anything back, and orders cannot be cancelled once checkout is complete. The full terms are set out in our refund policy.

Why Gorilla Cases
We sell phone cases, which means we sell to people who have been disappointed by a phone case before. Usually by a listing that promised something the case could not do. So our rule is simple: we publish what the manufacturer specifies, and where the manufacturer specifies nothing, we say so instead of inventing a number. You will have noticed that on this page. No drop rating, because none is published. No card count, because none is published. No weight, no water resistance, no RFID claim. Where the answer is "not specified," that is the answer you get.
The same applies to the material. This is a PU leather case with a crazy-horse finish, and calling it genuine leather would sell a few more units and generate a lot more returns. We would rather have the smaller number and keep you in the Gorilla Family.
Your Galaxy S8 has lasted longer than most phones do, which says something about the phone and something about you. A folio keeps the screen covered, the back unmarked, and your cards in the same hand as the handset. Order yours, use code 10offorder1 if it is your first time, and if you want to talk to someone first, 978-797-0223 reaches a person.
