- Physical abrasion protection. With the cover closed, nothing in your pocket touches the lens glass.

The honest limitation: you will forget to open it. Every camera-cover owner has taken a black photo at least once. Some designs also add a millimetre or two of thickness over the camera area, which can affect how the phone sits on a wireless charging pad.
Note that a slide cover protects against scratching but not against a direct impact on the camera area. If the phone lands lens-down on gravel, a raised metal ring around the module is what saves you, not a plastic shutter.
What a kickstand actually does
The obvious function is propping the phone for video. The more valuable one is grip. A built-in stand or ring gives your finger something to hook, and a phone that stays in your hand never needs its drop rating tested.
