This is one of the few genuinely confusing generations in iPhone history, because one pair of models does share cases and the third does not. If you have inherited a used iPhone or you are digging an old case out of a drawer, here is the definitive answer.
The three phones, side by side
- iPhone X: 5.8-inch OLED, two rear cameras stacked vertically, stainless steel frame, IP67 (1 metre for 30 minutes), around 2,716 mAh.
- iPhone XS: 5.8-inch OLED, two rear cameras, stainless steel frame, upgraded to IP68 (2 metres for 30 minutes), around 2,658 mAh.
- iPhone XR: 6.1-inch LCD, one rear camera, aluminium frame, IP67 (1 metre for 30 minutes), around 2,942 mAh — the biggest battery of the three.
Do iPhone X and iPhone XS cases interchange?
Yes. This is the rare case where Apple kept the chassis identical. The iPhone X and iPhone XS share the same footprint, the same button placement and the same vertical dual-camera housing. A case sold for one fits the other properly — not "nearly", but properly. That is why you will see products listed for both models together.
The XS's upgrade to IP68 was a seal improvement, not a dimensional one, so it does not affect the case.
Will an iPhone X or XS case fit an iPhone XR?
No. The XR is a 6.1-inch phone — taller and wider than the 5.8-inch X and XS. It physically will not go into an X or XS case. And going the other way, an XR case leaves an X or XS rattling loose with a badly mismatched camera cutout, because the XR has one lens and the X/XS have two.
The single-versus-dual camera point catches people out even when they get the size right. An XR case's small round cutout cannot accommodate the X/XS dual housing at all.
What about the iPhone XS Max and iPhone 11?
The XS Max is a 6.5-inch phone — a fourth size, sharing cases with none of the above (though it does share its body with the later iPhone 11 Pro Max in outline, the camera count differs).
The iPhone 11 is the interesting one: it uses essentially the XR's 6.1-inch chassis, so an XR case will slide onto an iPhone 11. But the iPhone 11 has two rear cameras in a square block where the XR has one. An XR case will leave the second lens exposed and the housing rim unprotected. Do not do it.
Best cases for the iPhone XR
The XR is the phone most likely to be a hand-me-down or a second device, and the most likely to be used without a case. Its aluminium frame dents rather than cracks, but the glass back is the same fragile panel as its siblings. A wallet case turns it into a single-object carry.
Note the XR's water rating is IP67, not IP68 — one metre, not two. On a phone this old, treat that number as optimistic.
Best cases for the iPhone X and XS
Because these two share a chassis, you can shop them as one. For water, the sealed clamshell covers both models on one part number.
For drops rather than water, the metal aluminium heavy-duty case adds a rigid frame around the stainless band — which is worth having, because a bent frame on these models is what cracks the OLED underneath.
How to identify which one you have
Fastest visual check: count the rear lenses and look at the screen edges. One lens and slightly thicker black bezels means XR. Two stacked lenses on a 5.8-inch body means X or XS. To separate X from XS you need Settings → General → About → Model Name, because they are visually identical.
Frequently asked questions
Do any of these support MagSafe? No. MagSafe magnets began with the iPhone 12. All three support standard Qi wireless charging, which works through most non-metal cases.
Which has the best battery life? The XR, by a clear margin — the largest battery of the three paired with a less power-hungry LCD. On any of them, check Settings → Battery → Battery Health; capacity below 80% is where daily life gets difficult.
Are these phones still getting iOS updates? Apple drops support for older models over time. Check Settings → General → Software Update to see where yours stands.
Is the glass back replaceable? It is, but on this generation rear-glass replacement is a laminated repair that often costs more than the phone is worth secondhand. A case is the cheaper answer.
Will an iPhone 11 case fit the XR? Physically yes, but the iPhone 11 case has a larger square camera cutout, leaving the XR's single lens sitting in an oversized hole with no rim protection.
Bottom line
iPhone X and iPhone XS share cases. The iPhone XR does not share with either — different size, different camera count. And an XR case is not a substitute for an iPhone 11 case despite the matching body. Count the lenses first, then confirm the model name in Settings.
