If you upgraded from an iPhone 11 Pro Max to a 12 Pro Max and hoped to keep your case collection, the answer is no — and not by a small margin. This was one of Apple's biggest single-generation redesigns. Here is exactly what changed and what it means for accessories.
What changed between the 11 Pro Max and 12 Pro Max
- Screen size: 6.5 inches on the 11 Pro Max, 6.7 inches on the 12 Pro Max. Taller and wider body.
- Edge design: the 11 Pro Max has rounded, tapered sides. The 12 Pro Max has flat, squared-off sides. This is the single biggest change — a case moulded for a curved rail simply does not grip a flat one, and vice versa.
- MagSafe: the 12 Pro Max introduced a built-in magnet array. The 11 Pro Max has none.
- Front glass: the 12 Pro Max added Ceramic Shield. The 11 Pro Max uses standard toughened glass.
- Water rating: the 11 Pro Max is IP68 to 4 metres for 30 minutes; the 12 Pro Max improved to IP68 at 6 metres for 30 minutes.
- Battery: roughly 3,969 mAh in the 11 Pro Max against roughly 3,687 mAh in the 12 Pro Max — the older phone actually has the larger cell.
So nothing carries over?
Correct, for anything that touches the body:
- Cases: no. Different dimensions and a completely different edge profile.
- Screen protectors: no. 6.5-inch and 6.7-inch panels are different cuts.
- Belt clips and holsters: no. The cradle is sized to the case, which is sized to the phone.
What does carry over: standard Qi wireless chargers (both phones support Qi), Lightning cables (both use Lightning), and any accessory that does not need to fit the body.
MagSafe accessories work on the 12 Pro Max but not natively on the 11 Pro Max, since the older phone has no magnets.
How to tell them apart instantly
Look at the sides. Flat and squared means iPhone 12 Pro Max. Rounded and tapered means 11 Pro Max. That takes one second and is unambiguous.
Both have three rear lenses in a square block, so counting cameras does not help here. Confirm in Settings → General → About → Model Name if you want certainty.
Cases for the iPhone 12 Pro Max
The 12 Pro Max's flat stainless steel rail is more comfortable to grip than the 11's rounded edge, but it also concentrates impact on the corners. On a phone this age, the factory water seal has also been ageing — a sealed case is the strongest single upgrade.
If you use MagSafe, there is a MagSafe-compatible waterproof version with a built-in screen protector — unusual, because most sealed cases push the magnets out of holding range. For drops rather than water, the aluminium heavy-duty shockproof case puts a metal rail around the frame.
Cases for the iPhone 11 Pro Max
The 11 Pro Max is already a 226-gram phone, so a thick rugged case makes it genuinely unpleasant. A slim metal shockproof case is the better balance — real frame protection without another 80 grams.
One thing the 11 Pro Max does not have is MagSafe, so if you want magnetic mounting on it you need a case with magnets built in or a stick-on ring. Adhesive rings do peel off in warm pockets — manage your expectations.
Which is the better phone to keep in 2026?
The 12 Pro Max, for three reasons: the bigger screen, MagSafe, and a longer iOS support runway. The 11 Pro Max's larger battery is a point in its favour, but on a phone of that age the cell will be well below its original capacity anyway — check Settings → Battery → Battery Health.

Will an iPhone 13 Pro Max case fit a 12 Pro Max? No. Apple enlarged the camera housing on the 13 Pro Max; the outline is similar but the camera block will not clear a 12 Pro Max cutout, and a 13 Pro Max case leaves the 12's cameras loose in an oversized hole.
Are either of these still waterproof? Both were IP68 rated when new — 4 metres for the 11 Pro Max, 6 metres for the 12 Pro Max, both for 30 minutes. Apple has never covered liquid damage under warranty and seals degrade with age and drops. Assume splash resistance.
Can I add MagSafe to an 11 Pro Max? Only with a case that has its own magnet array, or a stick-on ring. Neither gives you the alignment precision of a built-in array.
Do they use the same charger? Both use Lightning and both support standard Qi wireless charging. USB-C arrived on iPhone much later.
Which screen is cheaper to replace? Neither is cheap. Both use OLED panels at Pro Max size, which is the most expensive display class Apple made in those years. That is the argument for a case with a raised screen lip.
