Both phones launched in the same September, both are still in daily use by millions of people, and both are frequently mislabelled in marketplace listings. Can I use an iPhone 11 case on an 11 Pro Max?
No, in either direction. The 11 Pro Max will not physically enter an iPhone 11 case — it is too large. An 11 Pro Max case will swallow an iPhone 11 with visible gaps at both ends; the buttons will not align and the two-lens camera will sit inside a three-lens cutout with an unprotected rim.
The iPhone 11 Pro (5.8-inch, no "Max") is a third size and does not swap with either. And the iPhone XR — which shares the iPhone 11's 6.1-inch chassis very closely — has a single-lens camera bump, so XR cases leave the iPhone 11's second lens exposed even when the body fits.
How do I tell them apart in thirty seconds?
Count the rear lenses. Two lenses in a square block means iPhone 11. Three lenses means an 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max. Then look at the back finish — the standard 11 has glossy glass and a colour finish; the Pro models have a frosted matte back and a stainless steel band that shows fingerprints.
To be certain, open Settings → General → About and read the Model Name line. That is authoritative; a marketplace listing is not.
Best cases for the iPhone 11
The iPhone 11's aluminium frame and glossy glass back is a slippery combination. A metal-framed case adds grip and takes the edge impacts.
Water is the other consideration on a phone this age. The factory IP68 seal was rated at 2 metres when the phone was new; adhesive ages and every drop stresses it. A sealed case restores that margin.
Best case for the iPhone 11 Pro Max

Does MagSafe work on either of these?
No. MagSafe magnets arrived with the iPhone 12 generation. Neither the iPhone 11 nor the 11 Pro Max has a built-in magnet array, so MagSafe accessories will not snap on natively. Both support standard Qi wireless charging, which works through most non-metal cases. If you want magnetic mounting, you need a case with magnets built in or a stick-on ring — and adhesive rings do peel off in pockets.
