This is the closest near-miss in recent Samsung history. The Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S23 Ultra are separated by two tenths of a millimetre in width and one tenth in height. People buy the wrong case constantly because on paper it looks like it should work. It usually will not, and the reason has nothing to do with the outline.
The measurements side by side

Why it still does not work: the camera rings
Samsung moved to a 200 MP ISOCELL HP2 sensor on the S23 Ultra. That sensor is physically larger, and its lens barrel and surrounding ring are wider and stand slightly further off the back than the 108 MP unit on the S22 Ultra. The two telephoto lenses and the ultrawide also sit on a marginally different pitch.
The practical result: an S22 Ultra case placed on an S23 Ultra will either sit proud of the back because the main lens ring is fouling the case cutout, or the cutout edge will rest directly on the lens ring. Both outcomes are bad. Pressure on a lens ring is how coated glass gets chipped, and once the case sits proud it stops sitting flat on a wireless charging pad.
The S23 Ultra is also 6 g heavier, and its frame edges are very slightly flatter. In a snug aluminium case that difference is enough to prevent the phone seating fully.
What to put on an S23 Ultra
The S23 Ultra is a 234 g phone with a curved screen, which is a difficult combination. Weight means high impact energy on a drop, and a curved screen means the glass edge is exposed at exactly the point most likely to hit first. A case with a raised lip that rises above the curve is doing the most important job here.
For a lighter option that still clears the lens rings correctly, a slim-fit transparent TPU shell cut for this specific model keeps the weight penalty near zero.

What to put on an S22 Ultra
The S22 Ultra is still a capable phone and a lot of them are in daily use. Its weak point at this age is the battery, which after several years of cycles will not hold what it did new. Anything that adds heat under wireless charging accelerates that. A metal-frame case with a kickstand keeps the phone cooler than a thick rubber shell and gives you a way to prop it up while it charges.

Screen protectors between the two generations
Both use a curved 6.8-inch panel with almost identical dimensions, and both use an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader. Flat tempered glass sheets for these phones are typically cut narrower than the full panel so they sit inside the curve rather than trying to bend over it. A sheet cut for one will usually look close on the other, but the cutout for the front camera and the sensor window placement differ enough to be visible.
If you want full edge coverage on a curved screen, flexible TPU film follows the curve where glass cannot. It scratches more easily than glass but it will not lift at the edges, which is the most common failure mode with curved-screen glass.
Frequently asked questions
Can I force an S22 Ultra case onto an S23 Ultra? It may physically go on, but the main camera ring will be in contact with or fouled by the cutout. That risks chipping the lens coating and stops the case sitting flat.
Does the S Pen work the same on both? Yes — both store the pen in a silo in the bottom-left corner of the phone itself, not the case. Any case for either model must leave that silo clear. Check that a wallet or folio case does not block it.
Will an S24 Ultra case fit an S23 Ultra? No. The S24 Ultra moved to a flat display and a titanium frame at 162.3 x 79.0 x 8.6 mm. It is a different shape.
Do both charge at the same speed? Both support 45 W wired and 15 W Qi wireless. A case thicker than about 3 mm can interfere with wireless charging alignment on either.
