Samsung's entry-level A-series — the A01, A02s and A03s — are the phones that get bought as first phones, work phones, spare phones and phones for people who genuinely do not want to think about phones. They are also the phones most likely to be used with no case at all, which is a shame, because they have the least built-in protection of anything Samsung sells.
What these phones do and do not have
- Galaxy A01: a 5.7-inch HD+ display, a dual rear camera, roughly 3,000 mAh battery. The smallest of the three.
- Galaxy A02s: a 6.5-inch HD+ display, a triple rear camera, roughly 5,000 mAh battery.
- Galaxy A03s: a 6.5-inch HD+ display, a triple rear camera, roughly 5,000 mAh battery.
What none of them have:
- No IP rating. No dust rating, no water rating, no gasket, no sealed ports. A spilled drink into the USB-C port is a plausible way to lose one of these phones.
- No wireless charging. Cable only, which means the port is a wear item and keeping grit out of it matters.
- No toughened cover glass claims. These use standard display glass.
Do the A02s and A03s share a case?
They look extremely similar on paper — same screen size, same battery, same camera count — but they are separate model numbers with different camera island layouts and slightly different bodies. Buy for the exact model. The A03s in particular arranges its rear camera differently from the A02s, and that is enough to leave lenses exposed in the wrong case.
The A01 is a different size class entirely and shares with neither.
Confirm yours in Settings → About phone → Model number. Samsung's SM-A0xx codes are unambiguous; the marketing name on a marketplace listing is not.
Why a sealed case makes more sense here than on a flagship
This is the counter-intuitive part. Most people assume expensive phones deserve serious cases and cheap phones deserve cheap ones. For water, the opposite is true.
A Galaxy S-series flagship arrives IP68 rated — dust-tight and rated for immersion beyond one metre. A sealed case adds margin to protection it already has. The A01, A02s and A03s have no water protection at all, so a sealed IP68 case is not adding margin, it is adding the capability from zero. That is a much larger practical difference.
The sealed cases for each model
Each is cut for one specific body — a seal only works when the shell matches the phone exactly.
The A03s version is cut for that model's camera island.
And the A01 version fits the smaller 5.7-inch body.
Who actually needs this?
Be honest about your own use before you accept the bulk.
Worth it: phones used on job sites, in kitchens, around pools and boats, by teenagers, or by anyone who has already killed a phone with liquid. Also worth it if the phone lives in a bag with a water bottle.
Not worth it: a desk-and-pocket phone. For that, spend the money on a screen protector — cracked screens are the more common failure by a wide margin, and on a budget phone a screen repair often exceeds the device's value.
If you want the phone to last, do these three things
- Fit a screen protector. Tempered glass at 9H hardness is what stops sand and keys, which are the two things that actually scratch phone screens.
- Keep the charging port clean. No wireless charging means the port takes every charge cycle. Compressed air and a wooden toothpick, gently — never metal.
- Use a case with a raised screen lip. A lip that sits a millimetre proud of the glass is what keeps the display off a table in a face-down drop. Check the product photos for a visible rim.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Galaxy A03s the same as the A03? No. Samsung ships an A03 and an A03s as separate models with different specs and different bodies.
Can I use an A02 case on an A02s? No. Different phones, different camera layouts, despite the near-identical name.
Do any of these support fast charging? The A02s and A03s support modest wired fast charging; the A01 is slower. None support wireless charging.
Are budget A-series screens harder to replace? They are cheaper in parts terms but often not economical to repair relative to the phone's value — which makes prevention the only sensible strategy.
Will a universal case fit? Universal pouches exist, but they do not protect the camera, do not seal, and do not let you use the phone without removing it. Model-specific is the only meaningful option.
Bottom line
The A01, A02s and A03s have no water rating and no wireless charging, which makes port protection and screen protection the two priorities. They do not share cases with each other despite similar specs — confirm the SM- model number in Settings first. A sealed case is a bigger upgrade on these phones than on any flagship.
