Liquid glitter cases — usually sold as "quicksand" cases — have a sealed chamber in the back panel filled with fluid and suspended glitter that flows when you tilt the phone. How the chamber is sealed
The back is a two-layer assembly: a clear outer shell and an inner backing sheet, joined around the perimeter. Good ones are ultrasonically welded — high-frequency vibration melts the two polymer layers into a single continuous joint with no adhesive. Cheaper ones are glued.
Glued seams are where leaks come from. Adhesive gets brittle with heat and UV, and a phone that lives on a car dashboard or in a hot pocket cycles through that stress daily. A welded seam has no adhesive to fail.
You cannot tell which you have from a photo. What you can do is check the edge of the chamber under a bright light: a welded seam appears as a uniform frosted band, while a glued one often shows small variations or bubbles in the bond line.
Do they leak?
Rarely, but it does happen, and there are three realistic causes:
- Puncture. A sharp impact on the back panel — a stone, a key point, a corner — can breach the outer shell. This is the most common cause.
- Heat cycling on a glued seam. Repeated expansion and contraction eventually opens the bond.
- Pressure change. Sealed chambers can bulge at altitude. Air travel is generally fine; the volume of trapped air is small.
The fluids used are non-toxic and non-corrosive, so a leak is a mess rather than a hazard. It will not damage the phone if you remove the case and wipe it down promptly. Do not leave the phone sitting in it — oil will work into the port and speaker mesh.
The protection trade-off
This is the part most reviews skip. A quicksand case has a hollow chamber where a solid back would be. That chamber contains fluid, which does not compress usefully, and the outer shell is thin clear plastic chosen for optical clarity rather than toughness.
The result: liquid glitter cases give you decent scratch and slide protection and modest drop protection. They are a style-first product. - Keep it out of direct sun. Heat and UV are what age both the seam and the fluid. A dashboard is the worst place for one.
