The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are the same height, the same width and the same thickness. They take the same screen protectors. So do they take the same cases? Almost — and the exception is the one that matters.
What the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro share
More than most model pairs:

Because the dimensions match exactly, screen protectors are fully interchangeable and MagSafe accessories behave identically on both.
What breaks case compatibility
The camera housing. The iPhone 12 has two rear lenses. The 12 Pro has three, plus a LiDAR scanner dot, in a physically larger square block.
The consequences run one direction only:
- iPhone 12 case on a 12 Pro: will not work. The Pro's larger camera block does not fit through the smaller cutout, or if it forces through, it sits hard against the lens rim.
- iPhone 12 Pro case on an iPhone 12: physically fits fine. The body is identical and the larger cutout clears the smaller camera block easily. What you lose is the raised rim around the camera — the iPhone 12's lenses sit in an oversized hole with no lip protecting them, which is precisely where a face-down slide on a table does its damage.
The practical rule: a 12 Pro case on an iPhone 12 is a compromise you can live with in an emergency. An iPhone 12 case on a 12 Pro is not an option at all. For anything longer than a stopgap, buy for your exact model.
The other differences that don't affect the case
The iPhone 12 uses an aluminium frame; the 12 Pro uses stainless steel, which is why the Pro weighs more despite the same footprint. The Pro also adds a telephoto lens and LiDAR. None of that changes the case fit — only the camera block does.
Best cases for the iPhone 12
The aluminium frame on the standard iPhone 12 dents rather than cracks, but the glass back is the same panel as the Pro's. Sealed water protection is the strongest single upgrade on a phone of this age, since the factory IP68 seal has been ageing for years.

Best case for the iPhone 12 Pro
The 12 Pro's problem with sealed cases is that most of them kill MagSafe — the extra plastic pushes the magnets out of holding range. The MagSafe waterproof case is designed around that.

How to tell them apart
Count the rear lenses: two means iPhone 12, three plus a small black LiDAR dot means 12 Pro. Then check the frame — the Pro's stainless steel band is shiny and holds fingerprints; the standard 12's aluminium is matte. Confirm in Settings → General → About → Model Name.
