For the three-way iPhone 12 Pro Max vs iPhone 11 Pro Max vs iPhone XS Max matchup, the best iPhone 12 Pro Max waterproof case in 2026 is the Gorilla Cases iPhone 12 Pro Max Waterproof Case, listed as IP68 certified for 6.6 ft / 2 m submersion for up to 1 hour. For the iPhone 11 Pro Max, the Aluminum Metal Shockproof Slim Case is our rugged pick, and for the iPhone XS Max the Wallet Card Holder Case is the practical choice.
Gorilla Cases offers cases for all three of these big-screen iPhones, but the store lineup is not identical for each model. This guide compares the three phones honestly, including the fact that we did not find a dedicated waterproof case for the iPhone XS Max.
Why This Three-Way Case Comparison Matters in 2026
Gorilla Family, the iPhone XS Max (2018), iPhone 11 Pro Max (2019), and iPhone 12 Pro Max (2020) are three generations of big iPhones. All three are still in daily use, and all three are large, glass-backed phones that are easy to drop. Choosing a case that matches your phone and your life is the best way to keep any of them going.
The three models share a lot. The XS Max and 11 Pro Max both have 6.5-inch displays, while the 12 Pro Max steps up to 6.7 inches. Apple rates all three for water resistance, but that rating is a factory figure and does not replace a case.
The cases are where they differ. The best iPhone 12 Pro Max waterproof case is a sealed full-body shell, the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a slim aluminum frame option, and the iPhone XS Max has a wallet folio. We explain each one using only what the product pages state.
We want to be upfront about gaps. In our search of the store, the iPhone XS Max lineup shows a wallet case and a collection page, but we did not find an XS Max-specific waterproof case. If you need XS Max water protection, contact us before you buy.

Illustrative Use Scenario (Example, Not a Verified Customer Review)
Example scenario, not a verified customer review. Imagine a Gorilla Family household with three Max phones: a parent on an iPhone 12 Pro Max, a sibling on an iPhone 11 Pro Max, and a grandparent on an iPhone XS Max. They are heading to a lake weekend.
The parent seals the 12 Pro Max in its waterproof case for the dock and the kayak. The sibling uses the aluminum slim case for trail walks, and the grandparent keeps the XS Max wallet case with a transit pass and a card.
The point of the example is that one family can need three cases. A comparison helps each person match the case to the phone and the day.
7 Protection Tips for Your iPhone Max Phone
- Match the case to the exact phone, since the three Max models are close in size but not identical.
- Run a paper-towel test on any sealed case before water use.
- Pair the aluminum slim case with a tempered glass protector, because it has no built-in one.
- Charge by cable with the 11 Pro Max aluminum case and the loaded XS Max wallet.
- Rinse the waterproof case with fresh water after pool or salt exposure.
- Keep chip cards in the wallet slots and hotel keycards away from the magnetic strap.
- Inspect any case after a hard drop and replace it if the frame or seal looks damaged.
What Is in the Box and How to Install It
Check each product page for the exact box contents before ordering, since packaging can change. The pages describe a two-piece waterproof case, an aluminum frame with dust plugs and instructions, and a single wallet folio.
Install each case slowly and follow the step list for your model.
- Clean your phone with a microfiber cloth.
- For the waterproof case, seat the phone in the front shell and snap the back on until every latch clicks.
- For the aluminum slim case, open the frame sections per the included instructions and close them corner to corner.
- For the wallet case, press the phone into the TPU cradle top edge first.
- Test buttons, speakers, charging, and Face ID.
